Singing Sandra, born Sandra Des Vignes-Millington in 1957 in Trinidad and Tobago, was a revered calypsonian celebrated for her powerful voice, compelling storytelling, and fearless social commentary. Known as the "Mother of the Calypso," she rose to prominence in the 1980s with her stirring performances and profound lyrics that often-addressed issues of gender inequality, social justice, and political corruption. Sandra became the second woman ever to win the Calypso Monarch title in 1999 and won again in 2003 with her anthems like "Voices from the Ghetto" and "Die with My Dignity," which became rallying cries for women's rights and empowerment. Renowned for her deep, soulful delivery and commanding stage presence, Singing Sandra was a trailblazer who broke barriers for women in calypso and left a lasting legacy as a voice for the marginalized until her passing in 2021.
